Massage Therapy has a number of physical and mental benefits, but today I’d like to talk to you about one you may not have known about before – facial rejuvenation.  At Massage Magic, facial massage is not only used to relax the entire body and mind of a patient, but also be used to help naturally ‘lift’ and refresh the skin of the face without invasive cosmetic treatments or chemical injections.

As we get older, there are a number of things that happen to our body that can change the texture and appearance of our skin: we produce less collagen and elastin (the essential ‘scaffolding’ that gives our skin volume and helps it to ‘bounce back’) and sebum (the oil in our skin that helps us to retain moisture and keeps external pollutants away from sensitive skin).  It also becomes more difficult for us to shed old skin cells, causing them to build up and leave our skin looking dull and lacklustre.  The process of Lymphatic drainage – where toxins are flushed from the body – also reduces in speed, which can lead to ‘puffiness’ in certain areas, most noticeably on the face.

Facial Rejuvenation Massage Therapy uses a variety of different massage techniques to tackle some of the changes described above, for example; the build up of old skin cells can be swept away with massage strokes, helping to immediately reveal the fresher, more youthful skin beneath.  In addition to this, massage techniques that promote lymphatic drainage can also help to remove facial puffiness.  The use of acupressure, facial exercises and energy balancing massage techniques can also help to improve circulation and general wellbeing.

The circulatory benefits of massage have long been reported but recently proven through scientific research (for example, in Frankin et. al’s 2014 article ‘Massage Therapy Restores Peripheral Vascular Function After Exertion[i]’).  Blood carries oxygen and important nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin, so as massage therapy can temporarily increase or improve blood flow to a certain area of the body, it can also help to ensure that skin cells receive the vital nutrients required for good overall skin health.
